Type of magazine


My music magazine will be an informative magazine with the latest on good solo artists and the latest band and also will have competitions as well as the top 100 songs that are the best in the country according to the members of the public. The magazine also will have Gig guides so the consumer can check and see if/where there favourite band will next be performing so they can go get tickets early. I can also get exclusive interviews with the headline artists/bands this is also so the consumer can see what their favourite music inspiration’s favourite things are e.g. inspirations, who were the most supportive of their career choice and more. My magazine will be aimed at 16-25 year olds because this is the type of ages who like to keep up with the current music scene for example younger ages would more than likely prefer other genres e.g. grime, rap whereas someone who is around 22-25 is more likely to prefer RnB/Hip-Hop my magazine will cater to people likes of different genres but will still be informative and a good source they can look up to and maybe want to work for in the future.

Different companies

Bauer is owned and founded by Yvonne Bauer. This organisation publishes a lot of different magazines such as “Kerrang” being the main music one but they also publish magazines about vehicles such as “Bike” and “Match”. In total Bauer publishes 100+ magazines aimed at many different target audiences, but their main target audience is digitally native 16-34 year olds. The percentage of the market that Bauer own is unknown but they are the UKs most influential publisher therefore they are more than likely to have the best/ most up to date news and that would be why their target audience is 16-34 because there might be some stories that are more serious than others. Bauer often use eMagazines and ePapers to get there products across the internet this is another reason why Bauer is so successful is there use of multimedia platforms to get there products to people who don’t buy magazines this gives them a chance to get the latest music news.

IPC Media is owned by Time Inc. This organisation publishes a lot of different magazines such as “NME” being the main music magazine they also sell other magazine that come under many different genres e.g. Business and Technology, Entertainment, Fashion & Beauty, Food & Wine, Home & Design, Luxury, News, Sports & Fitness and travel. IPC Media publish more than 60 magazines. Their most successful magazine Country Life is believed to be one of the publisher's biggest cash cows, selling a healthy average of 38,246 copies a week at £3.20 each IPC media don’t have a singular audience since the amount of genres they publish and tend to cater to people of all different ages and different lifestyle choices this is why they and a lot of other publishers are very popular because they cater do different people’s needs. It is unknown what percentage of the market they have but they publish more than 60 magazines.


Condé Nast, a division of Advance Publications owned by Condé Montrose Nast. This organisation publishes a few magazine the main music one being “GQ”. They also publish other well-known magazines such as “Vogue” and “Glamour”. They publish 26magazines aimed at different audiences. Their main audience would be similar aged to Bauer 16-34 because they are old enough to want to keep up with certain genres of music whilst keeping to their older audiences with fashion magazines and some music magazines would also attract different types of people for example if they had Green day on their it would attract different people if it had Eminem or a rapper on it. It is unknown what percentage of the market they own but they publish very influential magazines therefore they are a creditable company and are quite influential in the industry.

The Magazine industry as a whole
The current top selling magazine is “TV Choice” this magazine was released in 1999 and in 2008 it became the most actively selling magazine and has held the position ever since, the magazine sells 1.2million copies a week and has an adult readership of 1.8million. The magazine is published by Bauer and is released weekly the majority of adult readership were female as the magazine often has “soaps” which tend to attract more female than male audience. Whereas a magazine like “Kerrang” would attract more of a mixed gender because more men are into the rock genre of music and men also tend to not watch romantic type dramas. This magazine is also popular because it appeals to stereotypical housewives who watch soaps at night time and will also often have crosswords and glamour things in the magazine which would also tend to attract the female readership over the male readership. Advertiser would often invest in this magazine because they know exactly what people read this magazine and can cater around what to advertise in certain issues.


The most popular music magazine is “Rolling Stone” and was released on November 9th 1967 and is published by “Wenner Media” and has a circulation of 1,468,263 (2014). The magazine have a split target audience because sometime they cover the newest artists on the music scene but sometimes they cover serious topic such as when they covered the Boston bombings which sold considerably more copies. Rolling stone tend to trend towards the more established artists because they know that they have a fanbase of people who will see their favourite artist on the magazine and buy it to read about the latest news concerning the artist. They also attract younger readership with youth-orientated TV shows although they have more about current music and new albums they can sometimes have an article about a new TV show that the younger readership can read about and potentially watch. The music is the biggest reason people buy this magazine though as music is a big part of current life as people tend to base their personalities around their music tastes and this magazine takes full advantage of that by putting different genres of music in their issues, however it is always the latest well established artist that will be on the cover and feature. Investors would be equally inclined to invest in this magazine because it is a well-established magazine with a good reputation for good products/bands are solo artists.

You can spend as much as $500,000 to buy the inside front cover of some national magazines.

Billboard is an American music magazine. The first issue of Billboard was published on November 1st 1894 and is distinguished as being one of the oldest trade magazines in the world. The magazine was originally focused on bill posting and outdoor amusements before specialising in the music industry in the 1950s the magazines contains many different genres but the main genres billboard uses are R&B/Hip-Hop, Adult Pop, Rock and Dance. Billboard always uses the same style in their magazine especially in the front cover they use 2 different styles to make the image stand out. (The image is a constant in every billboard front cover) They either use Black bold writing with some of the lower case letters having a colour fill this text is always at the very top of the cover whereas the alternate cover has the word “Billboard” going down the left side, they use the same font for each style. The magazines are also colourful to attract potential customers to their magazine. The target audience of this magazine is 16-26 year olds this is because the magazine provides its readers with the latest updates from the charts and has a variety of music artists to interest people of different ages. The Billboard website is very clearly structured and makes the stories very easy to differentiate to find different music tastes the colour scheme of the site is black and white this also helps with the very clear structure of the website. Billboard also has its own music app for people to download from the app store/android store and this has the latest music top 10 lists etc. Billboard sponsor a few events such as “Billboard touring conference & awards” “The Billboard power 100” “Billboard Latin music conference and awards” and the last one being “Billboard women in music luncheon”.
